Chapter twelve

I was locking up for the day when I saw Jay walking towards me. He smiled when our eyes met and my heart skipped a beat. I wondered if the euphoric, slightly uncomfortable feeling I got in my gut every time I laid eyes on him would ever change.

I hoped not.

“Hey,” he said when he reached me, circling an arm around my waist and kissing me.

“Hey yourself.” I stroked his cheek, the soft skin rosy and cold. “I thought you’d be working in the library late today?”

“I skipped lunch and spent it in the library instead.”

“How are you feeling?”

“Much better. I still feel like I have a lead ball in my stomach and don’t feel like eating much, but other than that I’m fine.”

“Glad to hear it.” I drew him in for another soft kiss and felt him smile against my lips.

“I can always eat a brownie,” he said as he pulled away, licking his lips. The cheeky glint in his eyes made me want to pull him back inside the bakery and have my way with him.

“Is that so?”

“Mhm.”

“Good thing I have some left then.” I jerked my chin towards the bag I had propped against the wall.

“Awesome!” Jay exclaimed, reaching to take the bag. “Let’s go back to my place. I think I can scavenge the fridge for something edible, although I haven’t been to the supermarket in days...” Jay trailed off, probably taking a mental inventory of what he had in his fridge.

“Last time I checked, which was yesterday by the way, you had a couple of eggs, some butter, a questionable tomato, and half a pint of milk.”

Jay scrunched his nose. “Yeah, you’re probably right.”

“Besides, I need to go to the centre. I have to take my dog back, at the very least. But I also wanted to talk to Shane and see how everyone’s doing.”

The light in Jay’s eyes dimmed as he nodded. “Alright, no worries. I guess I’ll see you tomorrow, then?”

“Why don’t you come with me?” I asked, swallowing with difficulty. My mouth had suddenly become dry. I held my breath as I waited for Jay’s response, doubt creeping in.

“I’d love that,” Jay said with a bright smile, and I could breathe again.
